Protect your roof and save on energy by reducing high heat build up in your attic.

Find the right size fan for the air exchange rate you need.

The dimensions of your room and type of environment will change what size fan you need. Calculate your requirements to find the right fan.

To determine the proper size SF Fan for your application, find your required air exchange rate in the table and use the following formula:

Volume in cubic feet (length x width x height in feet) / Air exchange rate in minutes = Required CFM

Attic Ventilation

The recommended air changes in an attic are about 2-3 minutes per air change to keep temperatures down. 3 minutes for nothern climates.

Using the formula above provides your required CFM of the exhaust fan, but there must be enough venting to supply fresh air to the attic space.

A good rule of thumb for an inlet opening is 1.5 ft2 for every 1000 CFM of airflow.

To get the volume of your attic, use the formula that matches your roof type.

Caution - Attic temperatures can get very high and exceed the high temperature protection device, shutting down the fan if there is not enough air change to keep the attic at a temperature below 120 °F.

Location Air Change Rate (mins) Usage
Attic 2 Summer heat removal
Utility Room 7 General ventilation
Garage 5 Fumes & moderate heat removal
Workshop 6 Dust, fumes & moderate heat
Greenhouse 2 Summer heat removal
Storage Shed 12 Humidity & moderate heat control
Summer Cooling 1 Summer heat removal, unless specified above
